Story Circles: Cultivating Intercultural Connections

During this 60-minute session, participants will learn how Story Circles can be used as an intervention in a variety of settings across multiple populations as a tool to promote intercultural connection. Attendees will explore the background of Story Circles, along with practical suggestions for implementation and strategies for adaptation. Detailed instructions for facilitating an introductory Story Circle will be provided.
By the end of the session, attendees will be able to:
1. Identify three applications of Story Circles as a means to enhance intercultural understanding among participants.
2. Identify two strategies for adapting Story Circles to suit their specific setting or target population.
3. Will be equipped to implement an introductory Story Circle in their own context.

Dr. Ann Bailey Yoelin is an Associate Professor of Therapeutic Recreation at Longwood University and a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. Her specializations include aging studies, administration, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, and intergenerational programming. She discovered Story Circles while exploring methods to foster intercultural connections within the classroom. She now incorporates Story Circles into her teaching with both therapeutic recreation and general studies students.
