This one group will change our Programs forever-

It’s the Boomers (the Baby Boomers).

I hope the word Boomers made you smile:)

It certainly makes me smile.

Why does this group get so much attention?

Boomers are the second largest age demographic after the millennials. We now will have the largest cohort of aging individuals needing access to Care-at-Home, Residential Living, Assisted Living, Memory Care, and community Day Programs and the like.

Why does this matter?

It matters because this cohort is the FIRST cohort to have access and exposure to a variety of leisure pursuits- unlike the “Silent Generation” before them. Many Boomers created a lifestyle that included a wider exposure to leisure activities. This resulted from exploration of new things through their work, their education, their participation in clubs, community activism, and volunteering.

One thing that we know about Boomers is that they are doers. They want to engage and participate in what life has to offer- and this includes leisure activities.

What does this look like for our Programs?

I can tell you what it doesn’t look like. Bingo…Ball Toss….Nothing Social about Coffee Social. This is NOT that cohort.

What Boomers need from a Program is creativity, innovation, exploration……ACTION. If you’ve been a part of this community you have already began to build this into your Program. We need to be prepared to meet these individuals where their at, not only with their functional status, but who they were and are in their Leisure Lifestyle.

This means seeking opportunities to educate yourself and your Team on new ways of doing things, new creative modalities, new community connections and partnerships that can provide our Boomers with a Program that allows them to continue to Thrive.
