Session Description:
Chair Chi is a gentle seated exercise program developed by Pat Griffith that adapts traditional Tai Chi Chuan for individuals who cannot stand or have balance limitations, allowing recreation professionals to provide safe, effective movement programming for people of all abilities. Participants will learn the history, development, and therapeutic benefits of Chair Chi, breathing techniques, massage, stretching, Qigong warm-up and cool-down exercises, and the complete Chair Chi form through guided instruction and practice. Participants will demonstrate at least two Qigong warm-up and cool-down exercises, one breathing technique, one massage technique, one stretching technique, and one seated Chair Chi form while gaining an understanding of the core principles and therapeutic benefits of these techniques, particularly for older adults and individuals from diverse populations who may benefit from seated movement programming, including veterans with PTSD, individuals with ADHD, people with physical disabilities, and others who benefit from adaptive, accessible movement programs.

Program Objectives: After completion of this session, the participant will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a minimum of two warm-up and cool-down (Chi Gung) exercises.
  2. Demonstrate one each of the breathing, massage, and stretching techniques of Chair Chi.
  3. Understand the two core principles that make these exercises beneficial for diverse populations.
  4. Demonstrate a minimum of one Chair (seated) Chi form.
