Notes from your Coach

Silver-Linings from the past three years.

A good portion of my life’s work has centered educating and coaching others about the value of filling your free time with positive and productive leisure pursuits. A subject, outside of the clinical setting, had little to no exposure on the national stage. It wasn’t until March 2020 that things changed. For the first time ever, the discussion of what to do with free time was brought to the forefront of our minds. Secretly, well I guess not so secretly if I’m telling you here….I was THRILLED to hear this discussion. Everywhere I turned I heard the words “Bored” or the phrase, “I don’t know what to do.”

People started revisiting past leisure interests, honed skills, took the time to learn new things, found new ways to connect. Others struggled. Some found it hard to muster any interest in doing anything with their time or even further numbed-out on alcohol, drugs, food, and the like. In the end, what is underscored, at least in my mind, is the following:

What you do with your Free Time is directly related to your Quality of Life. What you do with your Free Time matters. Just the mere fact this is now part of the conversation means EVERYTHING. Once we know this, we can then look at our communities- our children, our families, those with disabilities, and the aging population and understand how important it is to stay on the positive-productive track of free-time.

As Maya Angelou so famously said, ” Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”

The ONE thing you need to do before you hire your next Life Enrichment staff

If I can sum up one of the biggest problems in this profession it would be hiring the WRONG person for the job!! I can’t tell you how much money and precious time and energy are wasted when communities hire the wrong person! Everyone suffers, including the clients.

As a Consultant and Coach I view this as essential element for creating a great team and ultimately a great Program. It is SO frustrating. Sometimes I want to ask, are we hiring for a pulse? Because if so, let’s just put that in the job description!

No, we want someone passionate, enthusiastic, creative, and bright! And that’s just for starters!!

So, what’s the ONE thing

Life Enrichment Departments NEED and MUST do before hiring?

Answer: HAVE THE PERSON SHADOW FOR A WEEK!

I know, I know….I hear you now…..

“No one is going to do that!”

Well, if they don’t want to do that…..

Then……….. Do you want this kind of person on your team?

Hmmmm…?????????

It doesn’t have to be a full week…two or three days…my point here is to have that person get super clear on what her/his days will look like working in your community.

The person will get clearer on:

  • The work itself
  • The Life Enrichment team and its members
  • The Interdisciplinary staff
  • The Residents or Clients
  • The pace and flow of the day
  • The duties and expectations of the job

You will get clearer on who this person is by:

  • Observing their body language. After all, it’s almost 98% of how we communicate with one another!
  • Observing how the person engages with clients and staff
  • Observing the questions they ask. Are they smart ,well thought out questions?
  • Asking them questions as you move through the day; Problem solving and judgment scenarios to assess their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Observing how they handle challenging situations that may come up

How can this not be part of the hiring process?

How can we make a proper assessment when they and we don’t have the much-needed information to come to a decision?

Having a potential new hire get clearer on the reality and expectations of the work  allows them (AND YOU) to identify if this is truly a fit!

Now it’s your turn. I want to hear from you!

What are your thoughts or pain points around getting this started in your community?

What other creative hiring tips do you have for our Healthy Solutions Community!!

Until next time, Stay Inspired & Inspire Others,

Stop managing and finally start LEADING!

As we begin to make the turn into a fresh New Year, I can’t help to think about what might move the needle most for Activity Departments, Recreation Therapy and Wellness Teams. Hands down the one area that I believe is the starting point for a successful to team is….Leadership.

The Top 3 things a great LEADER will do:

1. Look at themselves in the mirror.

This Leader assesses her/his strengths and weakness. Is always striving to grow and become better. A good leader works just as hard on her/himself as any other area. A Leader masters her/his own psychology and can then be better at inspiring and influencing others.

2.  Has a Vision.

This leader looks at the bigger picture. Can look at more than what is happening in the present moment…but can see the long-term goals they want to achieve. Rather than just delegating tasks, A Leader is able to steer her/his team toward the function of the task as it applies to the bigger Vision.

3.  Is Accessible.

This Leader remains accessible to her/his team. This allows the team to develop trust with the Leader. That means this person can work along side the team rather than working above the team….isn’t afraid to get down and dirty when necessary.  She/her demonstrates the time and energy needed to get the job done.

Think of what our Teams would look like with this person steering the ship!  And if you’re the Leader of your Department isn’t this how you want to do business?!

Healthy Solutions wants to get you set you up for success in the New Year.

Leadership, Communication & Team Building: A Smart team approach

Now it’s your turn. How are you going to become a better Leader in 2021? Answer in the comments below.

Summer Fun or Summer Stress?

Are you ready for Summer?
I know I’m ready for all the good things about Summer…beach time, bbqs with family and friends, and travel. What I find challenging about this season is how I enjoy the Summer while juggling work obligations and personal life. You know me, I’m a mix of a Reality and Positivity…you can’t have one with out the other in my eyes. So, I’ve been thinking…how can I set myself up for success this Summer. This is what I came up with.
Rebecca’s 3 part formula to a Stress-Free Summer
1. Say N.O.
Say it with me, ” No, I’m sorry, I just can’t fit that in my schedule right now.” The first part of this formula has to begin with saying NO to others requests, demands, time. Our time is….
THEE MOST PRECIOUS COMMODITY WE HAVE.
AND WE NEVER GET IT BACK.
Respect and honor your time so that you can give it to the people and activities that mean the most in your life.
2. Manage your schedule.
We aware of your obligations, important dates, and deadlines.  Is there anything you can do to lighten that schedule- delegate to others, combine errands and tasks in the same block of time. Be smarter with your schedule so that you can include the Summer Fun into your schedule.
3. Plan your Summer Fun.
I mean get it on the calendar. Coordinate with your family or friends and literally put it into your schedule. It doesn’t have to be something big either- picnic lunch at the beach, seeing your favorite band in concert, a mini-quest. The most important thing is that you put it on the calendar. I find this to be such a boost of happiness knowing that I have something special coming around the corner. It makes those stressful days just that easier to handle. I’m celebrating the month of June by beginning to use this 3-part Formula.
I hope this sets you up for a Fantastic Summer!

Four MUST-Haves for a Great Activity Leader (aka Activity Director)

Seeing as it is that time of year again to certify new Activity Leaders (aka Activity Directors), I thought it would be fitting to discuss what makes a Great Activity Leader.

Four Must-Haves for a Great Activity Leader:

  1. A Great Activity Leader knows her/his craft.

By this I mean she/he is educated in the field. Not from a class 20 years ago, or that teaches like we are in another era. Educated in a class that talks about the clients of today…and even more so, tomorrow. A class that prepares and inspires students to be the best professional they can be. This Great Activity Leader not only has a solid foundation of education and training, she/he continues that education and training and applies real world applications of new modalities and tools.

  1. A Great Activity Leader has energy.

I’m not talking about the bubbly…my heads in the clouds energy. A Great Activity Leader (aka Activity Director) knows that she/he is in CHARGE of her/his energy. The energy I’m talking about is something deep within: energy that says..”I’m bringing it today!” An energy that works from love of self, love of service. This energy is shows up in a brightness of spirit, with smiles, humor, and the ability to make others feel glad to be around her/him.

  1. A Great Activity Leader is Brave.

She/he shows up….even when, especially when things are hard. She/he will make herself/himself seen in the work place…and seen as an integral part of the team. She/he is an advocate and is not afraid to speak up for her service. Some might argue that this ingredient should be on the top of the list! (More to come on this subject)

  1. A Great Activity Leader actually Leads, not manages!

She/he makes motivating and inspiring her team, her business! A Great Activity Leader (aka Activity Director) knows her teams individual strengths and weaknesses; she/he plays upon those strengths to get the very best from her team. She/he creates an environment of on-going growth and development. A Great Activity Leader is invested in the success of her/his team. Check out our online course on this subject, Leadership, Communication & Team Building: A Smart Team Approach.

As short and as sweet as this Must-Have list is, it works!

It results in a team and a Program that’s smart, creative, and serves it’s clients with passion and heart!

Now I want to hear from you.

Go back and review this list. Which on the list are your strengths? Write them down and CAPITALIZE on these….let them Shine!

Which on the list may be your weakness? Write them down. Now what can you do TODAY, TOMORROW, by the end of the week to work on these and build them into strengths?

I can’t wait to hear what YOU have to say!

Hurry, time is running out!

Three MUST-DO’s to Design the Team of your Dreams!

After years of consulting and working with hundreds of teams….I am 100% certain that the only way to have an amazing Activity/Life Enrichment Program is to design an amazing team!

What is a team?

I like this definition the most:

A group of people with different skills and different tasks, who work together on a common project, service, or goal, with a meshing of function and mutual support.

Bam! That’s exactly what I’m talking about. Thanks Cambridge University Press!

How do you design an amazing team?

Unfortunately, we can’t use a magic wand. This is hard and dirty work! Being a Leader (not a Manager), designing an amazing team, is not for wimps! As an Activity Leader (Life Enrichment Coordinator) you must have the courage to not only design this team, but also to LEAD this team….and maintain this team!

This takes Courage and Heart.

Three “MUST DO’s” to design an amazing team:

  1. Assess thy Program.

The first piece of designing any team is assessing what your Program will need. Assess your client population. What are the diagnosis, culture, language, socio-economic background, Physical, Social, Emotional, and Social Functioning, etc. Once you determine who you’re programming for, you know who would be the best fit to work with this population.

Next determine how many staff you will need to implement this Program. You might think this is a foreign concept, that this is out of your control….I’m here to tell you it’s not! The days of cookie-cutter programs are GONE. If you are currently working in a Program that is understaffed it’s your right (and actually your DUTY) to justify the need more staff. Not one Administrator will wake up one day and say, “Hey, I think I want to give the Life Enrichment Department more staff!” This is stuff of dreams (and frankly, delusions).

Not sure how to make this happen?

Use a consultant, mentor or someone in your circle that has accomplished this goal and write a proposal to justify the staff you need. Always ask for more than you need. MOST IMPORTANTLY, YOU MUST make it crystal clear how this will positively impact your Program. Your proposal should outline the specific clients that will be served with this additional staff, the innovative activities that will be added, and more. You get the idea. Quality staff, sufficient number of staff means Client-Centered care.

  1. Assess thy potential team members.

Now that you’ve assessed your Program you should have a clear idea on who you want on this team. For starters, are these individuals educated and trained to do the work? If not, they should be! Not all Activity Leader Classes are the same, so set a standard across the board. Your entire team should be educated by the same teaching body! The Activity Leader Training & Development Seminar: A Therapeutic Paradigm here at Healthy Solutions is a great place to start!!  You want your team to speak the same language! Be sure that as the Leader of the team your Administrator understands and supports the need for all staff to be properly educated and trained.

Now consider the person you’d like on your team. What other education and training would you want them to have? Would you like them to speak a certain language? What are the personality and character traits that would best suit the team: energetic and enthusiastic, good problem solver, artsy, athletic…or a little of each! It’s important that you have a clear idea of that person and to set the intention to get them.

  1. Assess thy teams skills and strengths.

Assess each member’s skills and strengths. Share those strengths openly with the team (great for team building, trust building, and professional investment). Marcus Buckingham’s Now Discover your Strengths is a great place for you to start assessing your teams strengths, including your own.

Once you’ve assessed strengths and skills plug each member into your Program. This is a MUST DO! You will never have a truly motivated and inspired team if they’re not plugged into their own unique skills and strengths. This is where we miss the boat. This is the secret sauce!!

This is where you begin. This is what you aim for.                                                                     This how you design a team of your dreams!

Already walked in to a ready-made team when you took the job? Think this can’t work for you if you haven’t been a part of selecting of your team? Not the end of the world.                             You still must work this same process.

Process:                                                                                                                                                          A series of actions or steps taken in order to achieve a particular end.

In this case, the end is designing the team of your dreams!

Do the work, and begin to change the way you think about your team!

FINALLY…A Planner with SOUL!

It’s hard to believe we are in at the tail end of our Fall season and quickly approaching the beginning of a new year! While some of you are getting your Holiday shopping done…I’m busy planning my 2017!!

I can hear you now, “Wow, she’s really uptight!”

Not really…more like….. I’M EXCITED!!! Excited for the potential that 2017 holds!

I’ve always been a goal-setting girl. I was the girl that spent New Year’s eve writing down her resolutions. My resolutions were a combination of things I needed to PURGE in the New Year and things I wanted to DO in the New Year.

My old goals looked something like this:

Goal:

Get rid of:

Pretty straight forward…sometimes effective…often times not…and not exciting at all, right?

Certainly nothing motivating, inspirational, or soulful.

Then I read Danielle LaPorte’s Fire Starter Sessions. This book and her work in general ignited my mind and soul. I began to look at my life differently…with a deep awareness of who I am and what I want to bring into the world.

I started exploring HOW I wanted to FEEL and then created my goals and my days, around that. Things began to shift.

But it wasn’t until a few years ago that my goal setting changed.

I started setting up my business and life to connect to these core desired feelings.

And so now, my goals look like this:

Core Desired Feelings

Social Media and Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia

Think social media is just for fun and laughs? Think social media has nothing to do with us in wellness and Life Enrichment?

Think again…

Introducing: The Memory Kit.

In The Memory Kits own words:

“It’s the archive, photo album, campfire story, recipe book, art gallery, soundtrack and laugh-track of a friend or family member–created by and shared with all of the people who love them.”

Since January, I’ve had the honor and pleasure of working with an amazing team to create a Memory Care Program. We are a team that continues to explore and implement creative, innovative and ground-breaking modalities.  This summer we began piloting a social media tool called The Memory Kit. The Memory Kit is an amazing social media app that allows family members, friends, care givers, and staff to share, learn and connect to Residents via social media.

Our program, we’ll call it Daisy House, has their own private group just for the Daisy House community. The creators of The Memory Kit (inspired by their own family journey with Alzheimer’s and Dementia) introduced this pilot program at our monthly family meeting. The families were excited and receptive and have since been connected to the app.

The Memory Kit (TMK) has great social and emotional value.

How?

  1. Connects families/friends of the Resident to the Resident.                                             Family and friends have an avenue to their loved one. Through pictures, quotes from the Resident or Care staff they see the resident participating in the Life Enrichment Program. This can provide much needed solace to family/friends knowing that the Program serves to provide a quality life to each and every Resident.
  2. Connects care staff to Resident.                                                                                               Staff can post pictures, quotes from resident or themselves to TMK. Staff can now think about the Resident in a different way…and in turn, think about their own role as care giver in a different way.
  3. Connects Families to care staff.                                                                                                  TMK allows family and friends to share memories, past interests, talents…serves to personalize the Resident. This provides care staff with additional (and personal) information to better connect with the Resident as well as serve them in the Program.

TMK is an amazing new tool! We wanted to share this gem with you.Go to www.thememorykit.com or go to itunes and download the free app.

We’re so excited about this project and will continue to share our progress with our friends at Healthy Solutions.

We would love to hear from you. What new technology are you using in your Program?
